Coca Cola Slow Roasted Beef
Loaded Fries
We shredded our Coca Cola slow roasted beef, mixed in cherry barbeque sauce, topped with Cotija cheese and chopped green onion for a scrumptious serving of loaded fries. Is it a meal or is it a snack (or is that a loaded question)? We’ll leave that for you to decide.
Coca Cola Slow Roasted Beef
We’re using a beef shoulder roast
This cut typically has a good blend of marbled fat which helps the meat stand up to cooking and will help it cook more evenly
Season roast to taste
We used a light amount of :
cumin
chili powder
berbere seasoning
coriander
onion powder
garlic powder
black pepper
seasoned salt
cinnamon
cocoa powder
Season top, bottom and all sides
Gently press seasonings into meat
Use a variety of seasonings for depth
Experiment to find your favorite combinations. Mix it up now and then so you don’t get stuck in a rut
We created a balance of salt, fat, acid & heat, going easy on heat since we will be serving a portion with adobo sauce later
Pour a bottle of Coca-Cola into crock pot. We like cane sugar sweetened for this recipe.
Place meat in crock pot, add more cola as needed; roast should be mostly submerged
Acidity in the soda will break down and tenderize the meat, which can lessen cooking time
Pop the top off a bottle of Coca Cola
Go ahead and refresh yourself, pour a sip in a glass and enjoy. Then…
Pour cola into your crock pot
Add roast
Pour in more cola…
…until roast is mostly submerged
Place thin pads of butter on top of meat
Add one diced onion for flavor and aroma
Start cooking!
Cook on high for 3 to 6 hours
Or cool on low for 8 to 10 hours
Actual cooking time depends on how thick the cut of meat is
You’ll know the roast is ready when the meat easily falls apart. You’ll be able to shred it just by pulling at it with very light pressure.
Pull from crock pot and shred meat
Save juice from crock pot for storing meat later
A Meal in a Bowl
This meal stars our Coca Cola slow roasted beef on a bed of rice topped with adobo sauce and fresh cilantro. We added slightly warmed cherry tomatoes and seasoned sliced avocado for a extra burst of color and flavor
